Ada Lovelace Day
Today is Ada Lovelace Day, on which we all celebrate a woman in technology that we admire. Working at Google, I found it difficult to identify one woman to actually write about, as there are so many that I could easily dedicate an entire post to*.
However spoiled for choice I am at work, it’s actually a woman I know who doesn’t work in an obviously technology-related role who I want...

Belleruche
Unfortunately I can’t give you an audio sample of the band I was obsessively playing during the recent holidays, as the only copies I have aren’t in mp3 format, but here’s a set of links:

Insane tests
a thought: often, we programmers put sanity checks in our more complex tests to make sure the tests are doing what we expect them to (effectively: testing the tests). One should then expect that there is a class of, technically, insane tests (those failing their sanity checks).
and this has made my day.

100 Billion Dollar banknote.
Zimbabwe has introduced a 100-Billion-Dollar banknote, in response to an official inflation rate of 2,200,000%. That’s a lot, and is surely destroying the nation, but a billion dollar note’s gotta be a bit impressive. Can anyone find an image of it? Search though I may, the internets seem to be failing.

DNA all over the place: The curse of untidiness
From the Economist:
“Are humans, then, hardwired to cling on to their possessions? If so, this primordial instinct joins a lengthening list of maladaptations to modern life. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have suited a nomad, because the itch to wander off led to serendipitous discoveries of food and mates. The ability to store food as fat was handy if food was...

The Writing on the Wall
Seen on a whiteboard in a hallway at Google:
You are in a twisty maze of offices, all alike. You have Laptop Backpack > I want to cast Magic Missile You do not have a wand in your inventory > Summon flying armadillo The flying armadillo is here, flapping its scaly wings > Polish armadillo Nope, it’s from Germany > Serve armadillo Armadillo gets served > Am I...

A Note
So, why so little out of my dump of web activity is actually written by me instead of click-of-a-button shared from other systems:
My arms hurt.
Mac keyboards are bad for my muscles.
Dogs chasing dogs →
So, this is something I wrote up to answer an itching question about four dogs in a field. After a figuring out the question, I kinda went nuts and had fun with this.
Click anywhere to reset the simulation. What’s happening?:
There are a bunch of dogs.
Each dog is chasing one other dog (and thus, each dog is being chased by a dog).
Dogs move at a constant speed.
Dogs have a...

This is pretty cool, quite a useful little utility. Tell them the importance of various issues to you and which way you lean on particular ones, and they’ll tell you which of the current presidential candidates’ views are most similar to your own.
Unsuprisingly, they recommend I vote for Dennis Kucinich. Spot on, fellas!
